Further Notes

There are conflicting closure dates and accounts surrounding the demise of this section of line.

CPLGB gives Sun 29/12/1940.

PNM 1980 p17 gives Sat 07/09/1940.

DSW gives Sun 29/12/1940 and states that "The nearby Gallions branch was damaged by German bombing during the early afternoon of 7th September 1940 and Beckton suffered at the same time but the line was repaired and the December 1940 timetable showed one train each way per day. This passenger service was finally withdrawn from the station on 29th December 1940".

RPSGB gives ACD - Mon 09/09/1940, LTR - Sat 07/09/1940, "though still appeared in tts until
December (last)".

Service "was withdrawn on 28 December 1940" - RHRGB Vol.3 London D&C 1987 p205. No mention is made of bomb damage in September 1940.

Unfortunately, nothing was recorded in RM, presumably due to wartime reporting restrictions.

So, it would appear that the line suffered bomb damage on Sat 07/09/1940. It was finally officially closed from Sun 29/12/1940 (in this case this would be correct as a single Sunday train was timetabled). The question remains as to whether the line was restored or not in between times.
