This section of line has slipped under the radar (including mine until now) as it is not listed in CPLGB or PNM. Plank Lane station is listed in C, DRS and RPSGB. Further information has come to light in Clinker LNWR Chronology.
According to DSW the service from Leigh & Bedford to Wigan was short-lived, but through services, including Manchester to Blackpool trains, continued to use the line until closure. See DSW Plank Lane for a detailed account of the line.
